Vijay Rapaka is the Director of Global Grower Operations and Research at Smithers-Oasis. Smithers-Oasis and their subsidiary, OASIS® Grower Solutions, has been a longtime partner of AmHydro. They’re known to many of our customers primarily as the manufacturers of Oasis Horticubes, but, as Vijay explains, there is quite a bit more to them!
Tell me a little bit about the history of Oasis. How did the company grow to have the reach and influence it has today?
Oasis Grower Solutions (OGS) was founded more than 55 years ago by starting with a very practical grower problem: how to reliably ship rooted poinsettia cuttings across long distances without losing plant quality. At the time, traditional growing media were inconsistent and carried risks of variability. We set out to solve that problem by engineering a better, more reliable propagation substrate.
That early work led to a major breakthrough with poinsettia commercialization, which helped establish Oasis Grower Solutions as a trusted partner in young plant propagation. From the beginning, our growth was driven by listening closely to growers and designing solutions directly around their challenges rather than selling one-size-fits-all products.
At the core of Oasis Grower Solutions is unique, proprietary engineered substrate technology. These substrates are clean, inert, consistent, and free of pests and pathogens, which makes them ideal for young plant production in floriculture as well as controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) crops. This technology gave growers greater consistency, lower losses, and more predictable results, which quickly built trust and adoption across the industry.
Over time, OGS expanded beyond a single product or crop focus. Our parent company, Smithers-Oasis, and our division invested heavily in research and development, built strong technical support teams, and expanded globally to stay close to growers in different regions. Today, Oasis Grower Solutions operates worldwide and serves multiple markets, including propagation, floriculture, nursery, and CEA, while staying strongly customer-focused.
CEA offers many solutions for global food issues, but the sector itself faces challenges. What role does Oasis play in supporting farmer success and the growth of CEA?
Controlled-environment agriculture is advancing rapidly, but it remains highly fragmented. Production systems vary widely by geography, scale, and level of technology—from small hoop houses to highly automated indoor farms and large greenhouse operations. That diversity creates complexity and risk for growers.
Oasis Grower Solutions plays a stabilizing role in this evolving landscape. Our focus is to provide growers with a consistent, reliable foundation at the root zone—regardless of scale or production system. Our engineered substrates are clean, inert, and disease-free, enabling greater precision, repeatability, and risk reduction, which are critical for long-term success in CEA. That’s why so many CEA growers who built their foundation with the help of OASIS® Horticubes® are still experiencing success.
Strategically, we serve the market through a collaborative ecosystem. We work directly with growers to understand real-world challenges, while also partnering with distributors and equipment manufacturers to ensure our solutions integrate seamlessly into complete production systems. This allows us to support both early-stage growers and large, sophisticated operations without forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.
Ultimately, OGS supports the growth of CEA by simplifying complexity, improving consistency, and giving growers the confidence to scale. As the sector continues to evolve, our role remains clear: deliver dependable, science-based solutions that help growers perform today and adapt for the future.
Oasis offers such a dependable product, but CEA entrepreneurs often look for the newest and most exciting innovations on the market. Does that attitude present a challenge for Oasis? If so, how have you approached it?
That’s a good question, and it’s one we think about strategically. Growing media is a highly competitive and fast-moving space, and CEA entrepreneurs are naturally drawn to what’s new and exciting. That would be a challenge for a company known for reliability and consistency, if we had not introduced new, vastly improved substrate innovations in recent years, like our OASIS® AeroSubstrates™. Our reputation for reliability and consistency, coupled with ongoing innovation, is a distinct advantage in an industry where dependability is critical.
Our approach has been to stay disciplined and grower-focused. We invest heavily in research and new product development, as well as education, technical support, and real-world demonstration trials so growers can evaluate performance based on outcomes, not marketing claims. In some cases, growers choose to experiment elsewhere—and that’s part of the reality of any industry. But we see many of those growers return once they recognize the value of consistency, predictability, and long-term performance that our older substrates and new innovations offer.
At the same time, strong competition pushes us to innovate. As I mentioned, a good example is our launch of our climate-optimized OASIS® AeroSubstrates™, which started in 2021 with OASIS® AeroMax™ PlugSheet, which was followed by OASIS® AeroSelect™ PlugSheet (an option with higher water holding capacity). Since then, we’ve added PlainSheets designed specifically for microgreens as well as automation-ready singulated plug trays for both OASIS® AeroMax™ and OASIS® AeroSelect™.
All of these new precision hydroponic substrates were developed in direct response to CEA growers seeking greater root-zone precision, performance, and sustainability. It reflects how we combine proven engineering discipline with next-generation innovation rather than chasing trends for their own sake.
So, while the market’s appetite for innovation is real, we see it less as a threat and more as a catalyst. It keeps us focused on delivering solutions that are not only exciting, but scalable, reliable, and commercially viable for growers over the long term.
What are you most excited about in the world of CEA these days?
What excites me most about CEA right now is that it has clearly moved from a niche concept to a strategic necessity. The pandemic highlighted vulnerabilities in global food systems, and ongoing geopolitical tensions have reinforced how critical local, reliable food production really is. CEA has become an essential part of food security conversations worldwide.
From a production standpoint, there is tremendous momentum around efficiency. Automation, data-driven decision making, and system integration are all improving how growers scale and operate more consistently. That progress is important, especially as labor availability and cost continue to challenge the sector.
What I find particularly exciting, however, is the acceleration in plant breeding specifically for CEA. Historically, many crops grown in controlled environments were adapted from open-field genetics. Today, we’re seeing focused breeding efforts to develop varieties designed for indoor and greenhouse systems—plants that perform better under artificial light, tighter spacing, faster crop cycles, and controlled root-zone conditions. Our Oasis Grower Solutions substrates and other products are contributing to these advancements, as breeders and AgBiotech scientists use them in their research.
That shift is foundational. When the genetics, the production system, and the root-zone environment are all designed to work together, the entire CEA model becomes more efficient, predictable, and economically viable. That convergence is where I believe the next phase of growth in CEA will come from—and it’s what makes this moment in the industry especially exciting.
Finally, is there anything else you want to share about why Oasis products should be the first choice for CEA growers?
Oasis Grower Solutions should be the first choice for CEA growers because we consistently deliver what matters most in controlled environments: quality, consistency, and dependability—both in our products and in how we support growers.
Our engineered substrates are clean, inert, and free of pests and pathogens, which helps growers reduce risk and achieve predictable results in highly controlled production systems. Just as importantly, our global manufacturing footprint and supply chain provide reliability and scalability, allowing growers to plan and operate with confidence as they grow.
We are also continuously innovating. Our research and development efforts are driven directly by grower challenges, resulting in new solutions that improve performance, efficiency, and sustainability—while still meeting the commercial realities of CEA production.
Above all, Oasis Grower Solutions is a long-term partner. We are committed to serving growers of every size—from emerging operations to large, sophisticated facilities—by listening closely, solving real problems, and helping improve both operational outcomes and profitability. That combination of trust, performance, and partnership is what truly differentiates OGS in the CEA space.
